Senior Cheyenne Himelright's goal with seven minutes remaining in the match was the insurance Madill needed in a 4-2 soccer season-opening win against Atoka on Alumni Field Tuesday night. The boys blanked Atoka 5-0 for a runaway victory over the Wampuscats.
In the girls game, Madill found themselves trailing 1-0 after the first 40 minutes. However, the Lady 'Cats' offense rushed in like the Oklahoma wind and carried with it three quick goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Melissa Guevara tied the contest, 1-1. Megan Mockerman kicked in a goal at the 35 minute mark to give Madill a 2-1 advantage. Guevara struck again for Madill to give the Lady 'Cats a 3-1 cushion with 30 minutes left in the match. Atoka pulled within 3-2 of Madill before Himelright's goal.
"The girls really came out and played well in the second half for the win," Madill coach Jose Cortes said.
The Wildcats broke on top early with a Jose De La Cruz goal and really never looked looked back in the shut-out win. Carlos Torres and Jonathan Laffita also scored for Madill. Madill was up 5-0 with 12 minutes still to play in the contest.
"The boys did well to score five goals against a tough Atoka defense," Cortes said.
