Madill and Plainview combined to score 104 points in a key District 3A-4 contest on Alumni Field Friday. The Wildcats, fortunately, achieved the 59-45 win amid an offensive explosion. Close games between the football foes have become commonplace.
Senior quarterback Paten Bond accounted for seven touchdowns and 515 yards of total offense for Madill. Bond was joined by a cast of players making big plays for Madill when it counted. His 238 yards on the ground came as Levi Holliday, Rowdy Votaw, Karson Green, Gatlin Looney and Sotero Trevino were willing to pave the path. Bond's 10-yard TD run with 53 seconds remaining in the contest sealed the Wildcats win. But, there was more, a lot more, to the story. Clutch plays were made throughout the game by Wildcats in the right place the right time. Gage Goff, Garrett Brannan, Avery, Samuel Bond and Clement made instrumental catches on offense. Gereall Jordan nabbed a key interception on defense. The defense stood tough in crucial situations.
Joe Avery made an outstanding catch in the end zone for the first TD of the game with 6:55 in the opening quarter. Kicker Edgar Salinas pushed Madill's lead to 10-0 with his 27-yard field goal with 4:11 left in the first. Trey Tulley got Plainview on the board with a 30-yard field goal with 4:38 remaining in the first half. The 'Cats answered with Bond's 23-yard scamper with 3:31 in the second frame. The Madill quarterback gave the home team a 23-3 cushion with a touchdown run with on 56 seconds to go in the half. Plainview had the answer. It was a 65-yard air connection from James Bowker to Gage Kennedy with 34 seconds in the first half. The half ended with Madill leading 23-10. They had only just begun to score.
Bond opened the third quarter with a 68-yard run to the end zone with 11:44 left in the third frame. The 'Cats held a 31-10 cushion after the two-point conversion was complete from Bond to Samuel Bond. A 15-yard run by tailback Christian Gentis gave Madill a 38-10 advantage before Plainview began to close in fast. James Bowker scored from 11 yards out to close the gap to 38-17 with 6:04 in the third. Brandon Nowell returned an interception back 25 yards for a touchdown to pull Plainview even closer with 4:39 in the third at 38-24. Plainview only trailed 38-31 as the fourth quarter began. Bond added three more rushing TDs in the final frame. His 13-yard score came with 6:53 to go. Austin Carrera scored for Plainview at the 5:00 mark. Bond's 1-yard plunge came at the 2:02 mark. That score was set up by a key 24-yard pass reception by sophomore Colton Clement. Plainview scored with just 1:04 remaining in the game on a TD pass reception by Chase Brooks. Plainview attempted the onside kick but touched the ball before it traveled the necessary 10 yards. Madill took the ball and two plays later Bond found the end zone. Madill (4-0) travels to Purcell Sept. 28 for another District 3A-4 contest.
