Once upon a time... or however fairytale stories begin. It was an ending worthy of any children's fictional novel. Ke'ven Davis' 5-yard touchdown reception from Paten Bond with only seven seconds left on the clock snuffed out the Purcell Dragons' bid for an upset Friday night at Conger Field. Madill captured the lead 19-17 at that point for the first time in the contest and held on for victory to remain an unblemished 5-0 on the 2012 season. More importantly, the 'Cats went to 2-0 in District 3A-4 play.
Purcell took the lead at 7-0 in the first quarter on a 20-yard TD run. Madill tied it 7-7 on a 35-yard run by Bond and Edgar Salinas' extra point with 10:00 left in the second period. Purcell added a 20-yard field goal and TD scamper from 29 yards out by Dominique Gavia in the second half and held a 17-13 edge late in the fourth.
Madill managed to move the ball crisply on its' final drive of the contest that was capped by Davis' catch on a quick slant pattern in the end zone. They moved 75 yards on the drive in 1:30. The defense surrendered only 17 points and 263 yards of total offense to a Purcell team that had been averaging just over 26 points per contest. The 'Cats countered with 312 yards of total offense. Bond eclipsed the century mark again in the rushing department with 102 yards and two scores. Christian Gentis chipped in four yards rushing and 10 yards receiving. Garrett Brannan paced the receivers with 54 yards. Joe Avery had 46 yards. Davis collected 38 yards. Coltan Clement had 40 yards. Samuel Bond had 14 yards.
Luke Chapman picked off a Purcell pass.
Madill hosts the Dickson Comets Oct. 5 at Alumni Field.
