The Madill football team and cheerleaders gathered at Alumni Field Saturday morning for media picture day. The event gives media outlets and organizations the opportunity to see the team as it will form in 2013 and visit with players and coaches.
"I'm excited about the upcoming season," Madill football coach Milton Cooper said on Saturday. "I'm excited because our young men worked really hard this summer in the offseason."
Last year's version of the gridiron group finished the regular season 10-0, won the district championship and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. The goals for this year's team are parallel to that standard.
"We're pushing goals for the district championship again," senior lineman Rowdy Votaw said.
Votaw is one of the three returning starters on the offensive line. Gatlin Looney, Sage Salyer, Judge Hartin and Karson Green have worked in scrimmages as a part of the offensive line. Daniel Thygesen will have a strong role up front this season.
Cooper said the line will be one of the strengths for the 'Cats this year. The receiving corp is another strength. Joe Avery, Gereall Jordan, Marshall Scott, Colton Clement and Rio Zamora should see playing time at the position. Samuel Bond is stepping into the quarterback's role this season.
Madill will continue in the spread offense. Cooper said the squad is emphasizing speed and quickness this year.
Defensively, the Wildcats are looking to replace linebackers lost to graduation. Cooper said those who will work at those spots are talented and hard-nosed players. They will just need to gain experience through playing the position and build confidence.
The competition will be strong in 2013.
"We're in a really tough district," Cooper said.
Cooper said some of the league's top teams are returning several experienced players.
Cooper also said Madill will be a fun team to watch.
