Madill basketball senior Haley Furr sank four consecutive free throws divided on two separate trips to the charity stripe in the last 11.21 seconds of Friday's game to help finish off a 54-49 win against defending Class 3A champion Sulphur in Lake Country Conference play on the road.
The Wildcats struggled to keep pace with the Bulldogs in a 66-39 loss to Sulphur in the boys contest.
The night began with the girls game. Sulphur held a slight 14-12 edge after the first quarter. Madill responded with 15 points in the second quarter to take the 27-24 lead into the locker room. Sulphur netted a three-pointer just before intermission to cut Madill's six-point lead in half.
The Lady Wildcats clung to a 36-34 after three periods. Kaylen Sweat, who had a team-leading 24 points, grabbed a steal and converted a layup to break the 48-48 tie in the final frame with just under a minute to play in the contest. Sulphur converted one free throw but missed the bonus to leave Madill ahead, 50-49. The Lady 'Cats rebounded and Sulphur was forced to foul to extend the game in hopes of winning. However, Furr calmly stepped to the line and netted the free throws for the final margin of victory.
The Madill boys trailed 19-11 after the first quarter. Sulphur extended its lead to 32-18 by the break. The 'Dogs added 34 points to the 'Cats' 21 second-half points on Friday.
Joe Avery and Samuel Bond each had 11 points for Madill.
Madill clashes with Comets tomorrow (Feb. 15) night at the Wildcat Fieldhouse in what will be senior night and the regular-season finale for the hometown team. The girls game will tip at 6:30 p.m.
