The Wildcats' solid fourth-quarter defense and late-surging offense aided in a 58-53 victory against Tuttle Friday afternoon in Purcell. The win puts Madill into the regional consolation finals on Saturday at 3 p.m. back in Purcell against the victor of the Purcell-Lone Grove game. The winner of Saturday's (Feb. 23) game advances to the area tournament.
Crucial baskets were made by Ivan Martinez, Joe Avery, Ke'ven Davis and Samuel Bond in the final minutes Friday. Madill came all the way back from trailing the Tigers by double digits in the contest. The pressing defense from the Wildcats in the contest's closing minutes was just too much for the Tuttle club.
The Lady Wildcats forced overtime with a three-pointer from Haley Furr at the top of the key with two seconds left in regulation. However, Blanchard outscored Madill 14-8 in the extra session. The Lady Lions won 68-62 and eliminated the Lady 'Cats from the regional tournament. The Madill girls fought back from a 25-22 halftime deficit. The girls also trailed by double digits in Friday's contest before making the late run using the press to knot the score.
